After the election on November 4, there will be a lot of happy, relieved people, and a lot of sad, frustrated, disappointed people, especially regarding the presidential race. This election race has not only held the attention of voting adults, but students of all ages have also become emotionally and politically involved. Teaching Tolerance, an organization that focuses on “reducing prejudice, improving intergroup relations and supporting equitable school experiences for our nation’s children” by providing activities, information and other resources to educators, offers an activity called Crossing Political Boundaries. The activity can serve a means of helping students focus on how similar our needs and desires really are, of sharing our expectations with the next president, and of researching shared policy interests in order to build common ground. The activity is adaptable to a variety of age groups, and is a valuable tool for helping bridge differences in values and perspectives.
